About Evan

American Baritone Evan Fleming is a New Jersey native and versatile stage performer engaging in opera, musical theatre, and contemporary music. In the 2023-2024 season, Mr. Fleming is elated to be a Resident Artist with Toledo Opera. While in Toledo, Evan will perform in mainstage productions as Gregorio in Romeo et Juliette (Gounod) and Harry Houdini in Ragtime (Flahery/Ahrens), as well as their Opera On Wheels touring production as the Wolf in Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? (Borths). Closing out 2023, Evan will sing solos from Carmina Burana (Orff) with the Montclair State University Chorale.

In the 2022-2023 season, he created the role of Father in the world premiere opera OURLAND: A Dystopian State (Davies/Helfgot) with the San José Chamber Orchestra. In May 2024, Evan joined the Opera Company of Middlebury as an Apprentice Artist. During his time in Vermont, Mr. Fleming performed A Hand of Bridge by Samuel Barber and The Telephone by Gian Carlo Menotti in several schools and local retirement homes. Additionally, he sang in the chorus of OCM’s stunning and critically-acclaimed production of Beethoven’s Fidelio. Finishing out the summer season, Evan performed in several weekly productions with Quisisana Resort. In addition to appearing in weekly concerts including a Broadway Revue, Opera Concert Night, and a Welcome show, Evan sang Barone Douphol in Verdi’s La traviata.

 In 2022, Mr. Fleming made role debuts in two of Stephen Sondheim’s best musicals. In the spring, he appeared as Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd (Montclair State University). Returning to Opera Steamboat for a second summer, Evan sang one of his dream roles: Bobby in Company.

 In 2021, he completed his Master of Music degree at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. During his time as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Opera, Mr. Fleming appeared as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte in 2021 and in two world premieres in the 2019-2020 season. In collaboration with the Tuscaloosa Symphony and conductor Adam Flatt, he created the role of Little John in Joseph Landers’ Let Us Now Praise Famous Men which was recorded by Alabama Public Television for broadcast in 2020. In addition, he created multiple roles in Michael Ching’s second modular opera RSBE: Remove Shoes Before Entering.

 Past roles include Dandini in La Cenerentola (Red River Lyric Opera), Groom in Avow (Adamo) and Man in Leo: An Opera in One Cat (Ching) with The University of Alabama, as well as Junius in The Rape of Lucretia, L’arbre in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, and Cola in Il giovedì grasso (Donizetti) with Montclair State University.

 Mr. Fleming received his M.M. in Vocal Performance from The University of Alabama and his B.M. in Music Education from Montclair State University.
